THIS WEEK OF WORSHIP

Scripture of the Week

"Let one who boasts, boast in the Lord."

1 Cor. 1:31

We talk about it often. I couldn't count how many times I've stated or prayed that our "boast" is in the Lord. But what does it mean? Is it more than pointing to the heavens after a touchdown? Is it more than redirecting any compliments or praises to Christ? There are many ways we can give lip service to this concept. But here is a list of thoughts that take this concept to the next level in us personally and corporately.

Our boasting in the Lord is authentic when I/we...

1) ...see that it's all about Jesus

- He is the source and sum of everything. We are not.

2) ...enjoy accomplishments but don't take the glory.

- He has called us to work, and we should be committed to doing it well. Problems will arise, however, when we begin to derive our value, condifence, and security from accomplishments. We drift from reliance on Him to reliance on self.

3) ...learn from disappointments but don't dwell on them.

- When times get tough, we trust Him. If we dwell, we are showing faith in what was lost rather than He, the King of Glory.

4) ...seek and practice humility and repentence.

- We will take credit we don't deserve. We will pout in disappointment. But, we won't stay there. We must repent and recognize that in each of these, humility will rise up in the redeemed. Our dependence can NEVER be understated.

5) ...redeem the talents, skills, resources and influence we've been given.

- If I can do it, I do for the Lord. If I have it, it's only because He's given it to me. It's all for Him.

6) ...embrace and participate in the work and mission of Jesus.

- Yes, we serve in our ministries. However, none of them should superceed the madate to make disciples. To be obedient, we must be obedient to ALL He asks of us. Talk about how He's working in you. Invite others to know Him. Live generously and show that your hope, your work, your confidence - your boast - is in Jesus.

I'm going to let this excerpt from Note to Self by Joe Thorn

express my heart this week.

Dear Self,

You really should sing more. You should sing more than at gathered worship with the church. You should sing in the car, while working in the yard, and in your home. And when you sing, you should do so with more than your lungs and lips. You should sing with your heart, mind and soul. People sing about the things that capture their heart and bring joy to their soul. People sing of heroes, victory, longing and hope. People even sing as a way to express their sorrow. Does anyone have more reasons to sing than you? As a sinner who has been forgiven, a slave who has been freed, a blind man who has received sight, a spiritual cripple who has been healed-all by the gospel-you have real reasons to be known as a person of song. So why aren't you singing always, only for your king? Is there little joy, little gratitude, little wonder? Do you just not feel like singing? The confession of your sins and gospel meditation will lead you to song, so start there. From the great hymns of old to the new songs echoing the wonders of God, you have more means of finding songs of redemption to sing than any other generation. So join the chorus of God's people, who have always been known as a people that sing.

PSALM 24:3

I LOVE THIS QUOTE I READ EARLIER THIS WEEK: "SOME MUSICIANS DO WHAT THEY DO FOR FAME. SO DO IT FOR FORTUNE. SOME DO IT SIMPLY FOR LOVE OF THE CRAFT. BUT WHEN THEY DO IT OUT OF PASSIONATE LOVE FOR THEIR SAVIOR,

IT SHOWS!"

THERE IS TRUTH IN THAT! THE CONDITION OF OUR HEART WHEN WE COME BEFORE THE LORD IN WORSHIP IS FAR MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE CONDITION OF TOOLS OF PRAISE, WHETHER IT BE OUR INSTRUMENTS, OUR TALENTS, OR OUR VOICES. AND WHEN THOSE IN THE CONGREGATION VIEW OUR WORSHIP AS THEY ENGAGE IN THEIR OWN, THE STATE OF OUR HEART IS VERY OFTEN VISIBLE. AND EVEN IF IT IS NOT VISIBLE TO THE BODY, IT IS ALWAYS VISIBLE TO THE LORD. THUS, THOUGH WE CAN ATTEMPT TO LEAD FROM A PLATFORM AND CONCEAL A HEART THAT IS FAR FROM HIM, NOT HUNGERING FOR HIS WORD, CUMBERED WITH UNCONFESSED SIN, WE MUST REMEMBER WE ARE NOT GRADED ON OUR LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE. THE QUESTIONS ARE:

"LORD, HAVE A GIVEN YOU MY VERY BEST?"

"WITH MY LIPS AND MY LIFE WERE YOU EXALTED?"

SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK:

"For we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come. Throuh Him (Jesus) let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of the lips that acknowledge His name. Do not neglect to do good and share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God." Hebrews 13:14-16

HOW I AM PRAYING FOR YOU THIS WEEK:

1) That the very fabric of your worship would be seamless - whereby each avenue God provides as means to exalt the Son are equally valued and equally practiced.

2) That with your "lips" Jesus is made much of.

3) That with "what you have" Jesus is made much of.
